Openwrt is open source firmware or we can say os for routers which is based on linux. Volunteers worldwide test it on their routers and put it to use for everyone. Being open source it has many extra capabilities developed over the period even when manufacturer stops updating the stock firmware. One can use it as torrent downloader, NAS etc.
